What Is In-Wall Air Sampling?

In-wall air sampling is a targeted method used to collect an air sample from inside a wall cavity or other concealed space. It can be useful when an inspection suggests that moisture or mold may be present behind a finished surface but the cavity is not yet open.

When It May Be Useful

• After a plumbing or roof leak affecting a wall cavity
• When a persistent musty odor is strongest near a specific wall
• When moisture readings or infrared patterns suggest a concealed issue
• When a borescope or small inspection opening identifies suspect conditions
• When additional documentation is needed before opening a larger area

What the Result Can and Cannot Tell You

A wall-cavity sample is one piece of an investigation. Laboratory results should be interpreted together with the physical inspection, moisture conditions, building history, and comparison samples when applicable. Sampling does not replace locating and correcting the source of moisture.
