Mold in HVAC Systems — Inspection & Testing

Your HVAC system touches every room. When moisture gets into ductwork or the air handler, growth inside the system can be spread through the whole building. We inspect and test HVAC systems in Norman and Oklahoma City — and only test, so the findings stay independent.

How Mold Gets Into an HVAC System

An HVAC system is warm, dark, and — whenever the air conditioner runs — wet by design. The evaporator coil pulls moisture out of the air, and that water is supposed to leave through the condensate drain. When a drain line clogs or a drain pan cracks, water sits in the air handler instead. Dust and debris that collect in ducts give growth something to feed on, duct liner and flex-duct interiors hold moisture, and a loose or disconnected duct in a hot attic or crawl space sweats condensation all summer. Any one of those can keep part of the system damp for months while the living space looks fine.

Signs Your HVAC System May Have a Problem

  • A musty smell that shows up when the heat or AC kicks on
  • Dark staining on or around supply registers, or water-marked ceiling tiles near vents
  • Symptoms that ease when you leave the building and return when the system runs
  • A history of condensate leaks, a frozen coil, or standing water in the drain pan
  • Visible buildup inside a register when you shine a flashlight in

None of those prove mold on their own — dust, soot, and plain dirt can look the same. That is exactly why testing matters before anyone pays for duct cleaning or remediation.

Why Independent Testing Matters

Duct-cleaning and remediation companies get paid to do the work, which makes their "you have mold" call hard to take at face value. Clean Air Detective only inspects and tests. If your system is clean, the report says so and you've bought peace of mind instead of a cleaning you didn't need. If there is a problem, you get lab results and a written scope you can hand to any contractor you choose. See current inspection and sampling prices, or read about air quality testing and post-remediation verification.
